Android's Introduction of their 8.0 Version on their Website

Last August 21st, the Android 8.0 dubbed Oreo was officially released.  Sameer Samat, Vice President of Product Management at Android & Google Play said in a post on the Google Blog that the Android 8.0 is supposed to be "smarter, faster and more powerful than ever" as well as having "stronger security protections and speed improvements that keep you safe and moving at lightspeed."

Welcome home, #AndroidOreo.

Regarding hardware, Samat added that the, "Pixel and Nexus 5X/6P builds have entered carrier testing."  Other phone manufacturers have been working with Google also for compatibility into their devices.

Last August 28, Techradar has reported that owners of a Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X or Pixel C are eligible for the update.  Recently, the Android Authority posted owners of Google Pixel and Nexus models getting over-the-air (OTA) Android Oreo updates to their devices.

As for Samsung devices, according to Sammobile the Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy Note 8 will likely get a major upgrade to the Andriod 8.0 because it will be it's first OS upgrade.  They posted a list of likely Samsung devices that may get the Android Oreo update, which still depends on the original Android version the device has and the number of OS upgrades that a device has already received.

The Android Oreo webpage acknowledges that this is the most significant change to the Android infrastructure which they said is based on "a modular architecture that makes it easier and faster for hardware makers to deliver Android updates."

Some of the new features of the Android 8.0 according to the Android website are:
  • Boot up is said to be twice as fast which the Android developers measured using the Google Pixel
  • The Android Oreo is capable of lessening "background activity in the apps you use the least"
  • Login to your apps are inputed by Autofill, of course with your permission
  • You are able to use two apps at the same time
  • There will be more protection with Google Play Protect as "misbehaving apps" are scanned every day
  • Notification dots on App icons let you see what's the latest and can be cleared by a swipe and you can also let it hide
  • The Android Oreo operates more efficiently to keep your battery at high levels such as fewer location updates
  • It has a new emoji set
  • It helps persons with disabilities with optimized audio
